The City of Paducah invites the community to a Flag Day Celebration on Friday, June 14 from 9 until 10 a.m. at Dolly McNutt Memorial Plaza located at 301 South 5th Street. The event includes a flag raising ceremony, the singing of the national anthem by County Commissioner Richard Abraham, remarks by Paducah Mayor George Bray and McCracken County Judge Executive Craig Clymer, educational displays, and activities for children.
Mayor George Bray said, “Flag Day often is an overlooked national day of celebration. The Stars and Stripes, a powerful symbol of freedom around the world, is a message of unity and strength. I invite everyone to attend Paducah’s Flag Day Celebration and take a moment to celebrate, mingle, and bond with fellow community members. While it is a small commitment of time, taking the opportunity to appreciate our nation and each other will help move us forward as a unified community.”
The Flag Day Celebration will take place on the Washington Street side of the park at the flag pole. Washington Street between 5th Street and 6th Street will be closed for the event.
The event is organized by the Paducah Parks & Recreation Department in partnership with the Sons of the Revolution, Daughters of the Revolution, U.S. Coast Guard, McCracken County Public Library, and the City of Paducah Police and Fire departments.
Flag Day marks the June 14, 1777, date that the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing June 14 as a national Flag Day.
