Section of South 5th Street to Close Monday, November 2 to Paint Commemorative Veterans Crosswalk

Date of Release:
October 28, 2026

On Monday, November 2, South 5th Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. between Washington and Clark streets in front of Paducah City Hall. The closure will allow crews to paint a commemorative veterans crosswalk connecting City Hall to Dolly McNutt Memorial Plaza.

Paducah Mayor George Bray initiated the crosswalk project to honor veterans and met with local veterans groups to determine the crosswalk’s colors and imagery.

“Paducah/McCracken County has almost 4000 veteran residents, and honoring those veterans is an important part of recognizing the sacrifices they have made for our country and our community,” said Mayor George Bray. “This crosswalk will serve as a lasting reminder of their service and sacrifice, connecting City Hall with Dolly McNutt Memorial Plaza, where our community gathers to remember those who have served.”

The crosswalk will feature the colors red, white, and blue along with the words “Gone But Not Forgotten” and an image of a kneeling soldier.

An interpretive panel explaining the crosswalk’s imagery will be unveiled during the Veterans Day opening ceremony at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11. The Veterans Day Parade will follow at 11 a.m.

Surface Construction will complete the crosswalk painting project, and the roadway is expected to reopen during the evening on November 2 following completion of the work. Please use caution, watch for the work crews, and respect the traffic control devices.

Members of the public visiting City Hall during the closure can find streetside parking on Washington and Clark streets. A public parking lot is located on Clark Street adjacent to City Hall.

Dolly McNutt Memorial Plaza encompasses one square city block and features four memorials honoring veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Global War on Terrorism.
